Glasgow pensioners enjoy Christmas lunch

Encore cook up a festive feast for Lord Provost and Glasgow pensioners at City Chambers.
A bumper 1,250 Glaswegian pensioners enjoyed a special festive treat this month as Encore staff dish up the annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunches, hosted by Lord Provost Sadie Docherty in the City Chambers.

Food and beverages manager Jenny McIntyre and her team served lunches to 250 pensioners daily, from Monday 8 until Friday 12 December, at the event which is a Glasgow City Council tradition for more than 32 years.

The five-day luncheon is no mean feast for Encore’s army five chefs, cooks and front-of–house staff. Encore head chef Robert Hutchison will oversee an army of staff during the five days as they prepare more than 450 litres of soup – enough to fill 150 standard household pots.

Staff will prep and stuff 55 massive turkeys, peel around 4,500 potatoes and 9,000 carrots, as well as individually wrap chipolatas in bacon. To top this all off, Encore chefs will mix 150 litres of gravy – approximately enough to fill a large bathtub.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: “The Senior Citizens lunch is a wonderful way for the city to demonstrate the high regard it has for its elderly citizens who helped build and shape Glasgow. It is a jolly affair and a great day out for everyone."
